Distributor Description:

Award-winning contemporary artist Sandy Young presents 26 of her unique works of art in this beautiful artist-designed book. The works presented reflect 19th century and early 20th century imagery and concepts of time, worked into mixed-media compositions with kiln-formed glass overlay. 47 photographs document the artworks selected by the artist to reflect the theme “Postcard Memories”.

This compact tabletop artist monograph is artfully designed with photos, graphic embellishments and artwork details on every page. Included is an artist statement and brief descriptions of the artworks inspired by turn-of-the-century handwriting, photographs and show posters.

Artist Sandy Young uses innovative techniques to create dimensional wall-hung artworks that can only be conveyed with the help of photos taken at angles to reveal dimension and form. Curved and raised fused glass surfaces formed with imagery overlay and interact with painting and imagery on a base panel to create a sense of depth. Close-up detail photos show wire, tacks, painting, montage, image-transfer, antique skeleton keys and fused glass pieces with kiln-formed bubbles.

Artwork imagery includes 1800’s and early 1900’s show posters, dancers, circus performers, western towns, horse and buggy, stamps, handwriting, postmark cancellations, correspondence, books, buildings and sewing. Despite the antique and vintage imagery, the artist brings a contemporary flair to her one-of-a-kind artworks. Young emphasizes the intangible aspects of the work that she describes as a “…metaphor for the multi-dimensional nature of individual life experience”. Conceptual themes include time passage, the juxtaposing of old with new, life stories, and the representation of psychological and internal experiences through layers of markings and fragmented images.

This creative artist monograph with the artist’s own touches is inspiration for artists and collectors alike. Readers will be delighted to discover this visual reference to Sandy Young’s complex work.

Sandy Young is a contemporary award-winning artist whose work spans multiple artistic disciplines, from mixed media, glass, painting and printmaking to short-form motion art videos and installation. Ever innovating, she has developed her own proprietary methods for creating imagery in glass and has received multiple awards for her art. Her dedication to artistic expression follows a successful career as a Photo-illustrator for clients such as TIME Magazine, Simon & Schuster, Random House, Forbes, TIME Global and a multitude of other publications.

Area Fires Cause Postponement of Open Studio

My Open Studio Event originally scheduled for October 22 will be postponed to an as yet undetermined later date. Area fires throughout Sonoma and Napa Counties, although now mostly contained have burned over 150,000 acres and continue to burn, leaving the air smokey and some roads closed.

Fortunately, my studio and home were not touched by the fires. There are still road closures near my studio and areas where evacuation orders are still in place. My heart goes out to those who have lost homes or otherwise been heavily impacted by these fires.

October Open Studio

I’m opening my Sonoma Studio for the second and last time this year! On Sunday, October 22, my studio will be open from 1:00 to 5:00 pm. On display will be work from my various mixed media series, including my newest work focused on the concept of “Being”.

This newest series of work combines kiln-formed glass and mixed media as with my previous series. However, most of these pieces are abstract and feature one or more porcelain figures (1860′s found objects). In addition, I have some mixed media assemblage pieces in this series. These works will be displayed alongside my other dimensional artworks in my working studio.

Open Studios provide a great opportunity for visitors to see me in my working studio, discuss art, and gain insight into my work. I look forward to the connections and conversations. If you’re in the Sonoma area, I hope you can stop by for some wine, conversation and art.

My studio is located at 50 Lichtenberg Ave. at Hwy. 12 in Sonoma. (Second floor, no elevator).

Sandy Young to exhibit in the juried group show “Hidden” at Marin MOCA from Jan. 14, 2017 through Feb. 19, 2017

UPDATE: Sandy Young Awarded 3rd Place at the show “Hidden”, Marin Museum of Contemporary Art

Hidden is a juried group exhibition featuring works that include the disguised, secret or concealed. Artworks in this show may include a secret code, double meaning, hidden imagery, optical illusion or other interpretation of the theme “hidden”.

Sandy Young’s artwork, aptly titled “Hidden”, is about hidden aspects of self. Her mixed media piece features the image of a girl with a kiln-glass overlay, dimensional wire forms and translucent encaustic paint. Young sees these elements as representing traces of internal experience that serve to both hide and reveal aspects of self.

“Hidden” runs January 14 through February 19, 2017 at the Marin Museum of Contemporary Art in Novato, CA. There will be a reception for the artists on Saturday, January 14 from 5:00-7:00pm.

The show is juried by Donna Seager and Suzanne Gray of the Seager Gray Gallery. Seager Gray Gallery specializes in contemporary fine art with a focus on works that combine content with mastery of materials. Partners Donna Seager and Suzanne Gray have established a premier gallery in Mill Valley that takes the stage in international fairs, garners critical review, and is recognized beyond the San Francisco Bay Area. Donna Seager is also an advisory board member of Marin MOCA.

And the Show Goes on…

Dress Rehearsal by Sandy Young

SYX Gallery | Sandy Young Exhibits…

“And the Show Goes on…” an exhibition of show-themed art by Sandy Young.

Juxtaposing old with new, Young combines early dance, circus and show posters with imagery of contemporary dancers and scenes, expressing continuity through time, or an interpretation of the theme “and the show goes on”.

Show posters from the late 1800’s and early 1900’s serve as inspiration for many of Young’s mixed-media dimensional art pieces.  Other pieces weave dancers in and out of the various planes, or in other ways feature show and performer subject matter, and yet all pieces exhibit Young’s signature layering of glass and imagery.  Sandy Young combines formed glass with various materials, including wire, image transfer and paint on wood panel, often creating a three-dimensional effect.

And the Show Goes on… runs from January 16 through February 14, 2016. Reception: Sunday, January 17 from 4:00-6:00 pm.

SYX Gallery is the new exhibition space featuring Sandy Young’s art in downtown Sonoma. Set in an historical 1910 building one block from the Sonoma Plaza, this new gallery offers collectors and visitors an opportunity to view Sandy Young’s art on a regular basis. For Young, it is an opportunity to develop site-specific art for future shows, as well.
